What is the KLC?
The Kansas Literacy Coalition (KLC) is a statewide nonprofit that serves as the unifying infrastructure for the literacy sector in Kansas. We connect organizations across the state — nonprofits, libraries, schools, adult education programs, businesses, and government agencies — breaking down silos and building the relationships, resources, and shared data that no single organization can develop alone. Through cross-sector collaboration, we strengthen the capacity of the entire literacy ecosystem: aligning efforts, reducing duplication, and ensuring that the people and organizations doing this work have what they need to succeed. And when it matters, we bring that collective voice to the Kansas Legislature and state agencies to champion the funding and policies that advance literacy for all Kansans.

Why Literacy. Why Now.
67% of Pennsylvania fourth grade students can’t read at grade level.
Outcomes are even lower for students from historically marginalized communities. This is not just an education issue—it’s a workforce, equity, and economic issue with lifelong consequences.

“Literacy is not just the ability to read and write—it is a right, and literacy plays a role in our individual levels of self-respect, self-worth, and dignity. Without literacy, there is no social justice.”
